We’ve discussed having a hybrid working pattern and guidelines on how to manage this in the workplace. We have also discussed how to get the best out of people who are just starting in the company to integrate them into the organisation.
But how do you manage a situation where your employee is not able to come to the office on the agreed days?
What if people come to you and say the two days or the three days you want me in the office don’t work for me? How do you manage that?
They’ll put in a flexible working request, which is their right. If you’ve got good business reasons why it won’t work, then you consider the request. You look at the case of why it wouldn’t work. If it’s the fact that it would put too much stress on someone else, for example, or because you want them all in in a certain day to deliver a part of a project, then you may have a good business case. It needs to be a strong business case to refuse the flexible working request. If you feel you have a sorting case and if they refuse to come in on the days that you want them to, it becomes a conduct issue that may need to be taken further.
